Italy/Verona Around 1450 Softwood/poplar wood? Original polychromy, museum condition Height 30 cm, width 18 cm, depth 5 cm
This charming Madonna sculpture dates from the heyday of the so-called Soft or International Style and was created in central Italy, probably in Verona, around 1450. The seated Madonna captivates with her gentle, flowing lines and the subtle elegance of the folds of her robe, characteristic of 15th century art. The preserved original polychromy lends the figure a special historical value, which is underlined by its museum-quality condition. The gentle facial features and the tender depiction of the Madonna carrying the infant Jesus on her lap, as well as her hands folded in front of her chest, clearly reflect the spiritual expression of the religious art of the era. These depictions of the Madonna were intended for private and ecclesiastical use and were used for devotion and worship. This is a rare and well-preserved sculpture that impressively embodies the art-historical significance of this stylistic period.
