This impressive terracotta figure originates from the Nok culture, one of the earliest known advanced civilizations in West Africa, which reached its peak between approximately 1500 BCE and the 1st century CE in what is now central Nigeria. The Nok are particularly known for their figurative terracotta art and early knowledge of ironworking.

Typical of Nok sculptures are the naturalistic depictions of human figures with striking facial features, detailed hairstyles, and decorative elements. The seated posture of this female figure may indicate a ritual or socially prominent significance. Such depictions may have been representations of ancestors or cult objects used in religious or ceremonial contexts.

The artistic execution attests to a high level of technical and aesthetic expression. It provides valuable insights into the daily life, social hierarchy, and self-image of this early historical culture.

Since the discovery of the first Nok artifacts in 1928, our knowledge of this civilization has expanded significantly, yet many aspects remain shrouded in mystery. This figure makes a decisive contribution to a better understanding of this fascinating culture. The object’s authenticity was confirmed by thermoluminescence analysis conducted at the University of Vienna.
