Carved oak wood

This impressive reliquary bust of a cardinal comes from the circle of the renowned Flemish sculptor family Bormann, who were known for their exceptional woodcarvings in the 15th century. The Bormann workshop, under the direction of Jan II Bormann, was famous for its precise and detailed sculptures, which exhibited a high artistic quality and realistic depiction of human facial features.
The reliquary bust shows the cardinal in a solemn expression with meticulously carved details that emphasize his authority and spiritual significance. Characteristic of the Bormann workshop are the finely modeled features and a unique richness of detail, which is reflected here in the Gothic carving on the robe. The use of oak wood, typical of the Flanders region, enhances the robustness and longevity of the sculpture and gives it a wonderfully shiny patina of age.
Hollowed-out busts such as this one were often used to carry holy relics in churches or monasteries and played a central role in religious veneration. This bust is an outstanding example of Flemish sculpture and combines masterful craftsmanship with spiritual depth.
