This Pietà is an outstanding example of the so-called Soft Gothic style. The depiction of Mary and the lifeless Christ on her lap is characterized by the gentle, almost flowing carved lines of Mary’s clothing, which lend the work a special elegance and softness. The folds of her robe, which fall in elaborate, voluminous arches, emphasize the texture of the fabric, reinforcing the contrast with the tragic content of the scene. The aim is to convey emotion through subtle, flowing forms.

The polychromy of the sculpture further enhances the vibrancy and emotionality of the scene, while the depiction of Mary’s grief creates an intimate, almost tangible connection between mother and son. Such depictions of the Pietà were widespread in medieval piety and served as objects of devotion and meditation.
