With the bull
South German
Around 1510
Carved lime wood, remains of polychromy
Height 86 cm
This impressive figure of St. Leonhard from southern Germany, carved around 1510, shows the saint in his characteristic depiction with a bull at his feet, one of his central attributes as the patron saint of farmers with livestock. The saint is holding a book in his left hand, indicating his wisdom and role as patron saint of prisoners. His crown is shaved bald, a reference to his membership of the monastic order, while his elaborately carved habit flows down from his body in elegant V-shaped folds.
Particularly noteworthy is the flared left leg, which is clearly visible under the cloak and gives the saint a lively posture. The artistic design of the folds and the dynamic posture testify to the high level of craftsmanship of late Gothic sculpture.
The figure is carved from lime wood, and although the polychromy is only preserved in remnants, the original coloring and the fine workmanship can be easily traced. This sculpture is an important example of late Gothic sacred art and fascinates with its detailed depiction of the saint and masterful execution.
