Relief
Late Gothic around 1500
Carved wood and polychromed
Height 44 cm, length 188 cm, depth 7 cm
This impressive relief from the late Gothic period, dating from around 1500, shows six busts of apostles in an elegant arched architecture. The figures are artistically carved and painted in vivid polychrome, which emphasizes the detail and character of the apostles.
Each apostle presents his typical attribute: on the left, Andrew is depicted with the cross, while John holds a chalice on the right. In the middle we find the central figures of Peter and Paul, whereby Peter is equipped with a key and a book, symbolizing his role as a guardian of heaven. Paul, on the other hand, is depicted with a sword, indicating his mission and suffering for the faith.
The expressive type faces of the apostles lend the relief a remarkable emotional depth and presence. The attention to detail in the carving and the skillful arrangement of the figures create a harmonious composition that is both artistically and spiritually appealing.
This relief is an outstanding example of sacred art from the late Middle Ages and reflects the artistic developments and religious fervor of the time. The dynamic depiction and the careful elaboration of the individual character traits make it a fascinating object for collectors and art lovers.
