Polychromed, original gilding
Height 91 cm, width 43 cm, depth 4 cm
This large-format, late Gothic relief from the early 16th century shows an impressively designed figure of a saint in an upright position. The angular folds of the cloak around the arms are striking, emphasizing the character of the carved robe and lending the figure a striking plasticity. Particularly noteworthy is the long diagonal fold that slides down from the cloak to the ground and cleverly accentuates the pointed shoes – a characteristic feature of late Gothic fashion.
The saint wears armor under his elaborately draped cloak, which could indicate his past. With both hands, he holds the heavy cloak, which is artfully draped. Long curls spill out from under his hat, lending the figure a lively expressiveness.
The original gilding and the colorful polychromy of the relief are preserved in good condition and emphasize the high level of artistry of the South Tyrolean sculptor.
