Ceramic with celadon glaze
China, Longquan
Yuan to early Ming dynasty (1279 – mid 15th century)
Diameter 27.5 cm
Provenance: Private collection Rome before 1975
Some of the early Ming emperors, in particular Yongle (1360-1424) and Xuande (1399-1435), showed great interest in Southeast Asian trade, which culminated in the seven voyages (1405-1433) of Zhenghe. One of the popular early exports in the course of such ventures were the celadons from the kilns of Longquan in southern China, of which these examples, which have come to light in Southeast Asia, are good examples.
