Mandala
Tibet
Textile
Total dimensions 72 x 47 cm

This artistic Tibetan mandala is mounted on a hanging scroll and comes from the estate of Heinrich Harrer (1912-2006), the famous Austrian explorer, mountaineer and author of “Seven Years in Tibet”. Harrer lived in Tibet from 1944 to 1951 and maintained close contact with the young Dalai Lama. His collection of Tibetan artworks reflects his deep interest in the culture and spirituality of the country.
Mandalas play a central role in Tibetan Buddhism as meditative works of art and symbolize the universe and the spiritual path to enlightenment. They are used in ritual practices to illustrate the cosmic order and offer the believer a visual aid to meditation.
This mandala is painted on a deep blue background and has four colors in the geometric center and surrounding circle, representing the Dhyani Buddha families of the four cardinal points: North (green), South (yellow), East (blue) and West (red). The number four also symbolizes perfection and balance, which is reflected in the four seasons, the four cardinal points and the four elements. This structure emphasizes the cosmic harmony and spiritual unity visualized by the mandala.
Another remarkable detail is the depiction of a flying dragon at the bottom edge on textile, which is a symbol of spiritual power, protection and wisdom. Dragon motifs are rare in Tibetan art and underline the special status of this work within the mandala tradition.
With its profound symbolism, vibrant colors and exquisite craftsmanship, this mandala is not only a visually stunning work of art, but also a powerful spiritual object that embodies the meditative practice of Tibetan Buddhism.
