This impressive figure of a holy pope is a particularly successful example of the so-called Soft Style, which became established around 1400 and is characterized by the soft, flowing design of clothing and facial features. The pope is depicted wearing a detailed carved regalia whose drapery falls over his body in gentle, elegant arcs, creating the illusion of lush fabric. The depiction of the robe in particular testifies to the skill of the carver, who masterfully implemented the soft style.
The finely carved, devout face of the saint emphasizes the religious aura of the figure. The polychromy in turn emphasizes the attention to detail and lends the sculpture additional vitality. The gentle expression and the sculptural modeling of the figure convey a spiritual calm in which emotions and devotion are subtly conveyed through the figure’s form.
Such depictions of saints were widespread in 15th century sacred art and served as objects of veneration and inspiration for the faithful.
