The painting is a high-quality, reduced-size reproduction of Rubens’ painting Holy Family with John the Baptist, also known as Holy Family with the Sewing Basket. The painting is now in the Gemäldegalerie in Potsdam (Potsdam, Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg, Inv. No. GK I 7589; wood, 170.5 x 129.5 cm).
The unknown painter of the small picture replaced the sewing basket with flowers and added a landscape in the background. Such alterations were by no means unusual.
