Nuremberg
Around 1500/20
Cast bronze
Height 28 cm, width 26 cm
This expressive figure of Christ from the early Nuremberg bronze sculpture from around 1500/20 shows the suffering Redeemer in a deeply moving depiction. The emaciated, almost skeletal body structure emphasizes Christ’s suffering on the cross and reflects the devotion and drama of late Gothic art. The sinewy arms are modeled with great precision and reinforce the impression of weakness and exhaustion, while the tightly wrapped perizonium encircles the hip area in elaborate folds.
The lowered head of Christ, which is directed towards the ground in deep sorrow and devotion, is striking and thus visualizes the theme of sacrifice and redemption in an impressive way. The bronze material lends the figure a special presence and allows the viewer to fully appreciate the fine details and careful elaboration of the body and robes.
This is a moving example of Nuremberg bronze casting art from the late Gothic period, which impressively embodies the religious and artistic ideals of the time.
