South China Early Ming Dynasty, 1368 – c. 1500 Diameter 10 cm, height 5.5 cm Provenance: Private collection Rome before 1975
A group of three brown-glazed porcelain jars for the Southeast Asian market, with model-pressed floral lid decoration. Glaze degradation and marine life growth indicate the pieces to be part of a sunken ship cargo. Such vessels were used for medicine, cosmetics or sealing paste and were exported in large quantities to Southeast Asia and also imitated locally.
